“My soul leapt out of me high atop that golden perch.  As I spiraled down, my heart fluttered like a caged bird with clipped wings.  My body dropped into the raging sea below.”

Horace’s soul is represented as that of a falcon.  When Horace decides to leap to his death, the soul leaves in defiance of the act.
